A Bit Old Fashioned, but They Did it for a Reason

This fall, I felt like I couldn't get a handle on the house.  Who am I trying to kid here, really it's been most of my married life.  There was no rhyme or reason or rhythm to household chores.  There were days when I felt on top of things, but mostly it felt like the dirty laundry, dishes, filthy bathrooms and dismal floors were on top of me, laughing as they strangled me to death.  Ok, that's a bit much, but you get the idea.

So, after some thought, I am trying what women have done for hundreds of years, assigning major chores to days of the week.  Come on, you've seen those vintage embroidered dish towels with the day of the week and the chore of the day.

Does this make me, ummmm, anal?  I hope not, because that is the last thing I want to be.  I feel like if I had a starting point, then I could be better prepared to be spontaneous...does that make any sense?  Spontaneous and on top of that beast that threatens to kill me.

The other thing that made me realize I had to bring this beast of a house into submission was I am back to work in camp.  After each baby, mama gets a year off from all duties in camp.   With the timing of our boys, I have been on the schedule a total of about four months in the last two years.

Now that Elliot is over a year, I am back on the schedule.  Wednesday and Friday mornings I will be in camp helping with cookie scooping and food prep for the weekends.  I also have a cleaning assignment in camp.  With these new responsibilities and the fact that the laundry and dirty toilets are trying to kill me at home, I needed a new plan.

So far, it's working.  I have been able to stay on top of the ferocious filth beast, be spontaneous when we need or want to and get stuff done that was often neglected or forgotten before.  I think I just have to accept that fact that as our family gets larger and older, I will have to be more strategic with my time, so you know, the laundry doesn't sneak out of the dirty clothes hampers and kill me in my sleep.

Oh, and maybe I need to make some of those towels...
