Lessons from the Berry Patch

Early, early this misty morning, I headed out by myself for the nearest berry patch, 45 minutes away. I knew that I would pick much faster without the two darlings in tow, so I managed to get a babysitter for a few hours in exchange for a couple of quarts of berries.

I had been dreaming about this all week, a few hours of quiet in the early morning, picking raspberries. Time just to think and ponder and get a supply of some of the yummiest berries on earth.

Here's what I learned in my few hours alone.

1. Caffeinated coffee is powerful! I don't usually drink the leaded kind. Wow!

2. Sometimes you have to look at the patch in a different way to see all the good ones that you have been missing. Sometimes that requires an uncomfortable position or two.

3. Don't be afraid to get a few scrapes or mosquito bites...it's worth it!

4. Music is my poetry. "And we know what love is because He loved us all the way to kingdom come." (Rich Mullins)

5. Always take a moment to eat a couple of berries, enjoy the quiet of the field, the birds, and the mist.

All in all it was a wonderful way to spend the hours from 6-9:30. I think I might just need to go back Monday.

  1. Oohh! Yummy!! It's been raining here so I still haven't made it out, but it's on my weekend to-do list.
