About
Even before we met in the fall of 1999 at Spring Arbor University, God was growing the idea of missions in Latin America in our hearts.
When we graduated and got married in May of 2003, we moved to Holland, Michigan. A little not so secret fact about Holland, about 22% of the population is Latino. This was exciting to us. We wanted to be in a community where we could practice Spanish, be around Latinos, and hopefully pick up some cultural things along the way. We both taught at a small school, Noah was the Spanish department and Liz the History department.
In the summer of 2005, we spent six weeks in Costa Rica, studying Spanish. We also were praying that God would use that time to show us if Latin America was what He wanted for us. While lost in the mountains of Santa Maria de Dota, God gave us a dream of Christian camping in Latin America.
That lead us to spend a summer at Barakel in 2006. We wanted to take advantage of our free summers to gain more experience in camping. That seemed to make more sense then going back to school for a camping degree.
It seemed that the next step for us in this adventure was to move to Barakel full time. So, in the winter of 2007, just months before Forrest was born, we began to raise support to come on staff full time. We reached 100% of our support in August of that year, and moved up to the North Woods. Noah was a programer and Liz helped where she could. Elliot was born in November of 2008, 19 months after Forrest, making for a busy mama!
In January of 2010, we were appointed as missionaries to Latin America by the Latin America Mission. We are currently finishing up our year of language school in Costa Rica, and the summer of 2012 we will be in Michigan, raising the rest of our support we need to live and serve at Campamento Roblealto in Costa Rica. Noah's main job will be working with the college aged volunteers. He will be working along side of them during the camping seasons (January and July) as well as following up with them during the six months in between camp seasons. He will also be working alongside the program department to help develop Bible studies, themes, and lessons for the campers. Liz's main job will be taking care of our three boys (Baby #3 is due June 2012). She will also help out where she can with hospitality to the voluteers.
This is one exciting adventure we are on!
